Broker Markup & Commission Calculator #
Quick User Guide #
What is the application used for? #
Broker Markup & Commission Calculator helps estimate the broker’s revenue from a single client transaction.
The calculator includes:
- markup revenue,
- client commission,
- hedging costs in the A-Book model,
- the markup or commission required to reach a specific profit target.
The tool is intended for estimation purposes only. It is not an accounting or settlement system. All results should be verified before applying any settings in a production environment.
Logging in #
When the application starts, the Log into Broker Assistant window appears.
How to log in #
- Select the environment: MTR, MTR WL, MTR PROP, or OTHER.
- For the OTHER environment, enter the API address and System UUID.
- Enter the Authorization Token.
- Optionally enable token storage on the device.
- Accept the disclaimer.
- Click Connect.
The application verifies the API connection before opening the calculator. An invalid token, incorrect API address, or connection issue will result in an error message.
Main calculator sections #
The screen consists of the following sections:
- instrument, routing, and calculation mode selection,
- transaction settings,
- markup settings,
- commission settings,
- A-Book costs,
- result card,
- Profit Target Simulator,
- saved settings and additional tools.
The result updates automatically. There is no Calculate button.
Instrument and reference price #
Selecting an instrument #
Select:
- Category – the asset class,
- Asset – the specific symbol, for example EURUSD.
The Contract button displays basic contract details, including:
- lot size,
- point size,
- pip size,
- quote currency.
The Advanced panel allows you to modify contract data and the conversion rate to USD.
Reference price #
The reference price can come from:
- Live mode,
- a manually entered value,
- the data available in the Market context section.
The application uses a single reference price. It does not retrieve the actual market Bid/Ask spread. Client prices are calculated by applying the configured markup to the reference price.
The Show on chart option displays a historical chart with the reference price and the client prices after markup.
Transaction settings #
Routing #
A-Book
The transaction is hedged with a liquidity provider. The calculator includes hedging costs.
B-Book
The position remains on the broker’s book. The calculator shows only markup and commission revenue, without including the broker’s market profit or loss from the client’s position.
Calculation mode #
- Ask side – a single Buy transaction,
- Bid side – a single Sell transaction,
- Both sides – analysis of both sides of the spread,
- Round-turn – opening and closing the position.
In Both sides and Round-turn modes, commissions and turnover-related costs are calculated twice.
Additional fields #
- Volume in lots – transaction volume,
- Result currency – the currency in which the result is displayed.
Internal calculations are always performed in USD. Changing the result currency only changes how the result is displayed.
Markup Settings #
Markup determines how many points are added to or subtracted from the client price.
- Bid Markup – adjustment applied to the Bid price, usually negative,
- Ask Markup – adjustment applied to the Ask price, usually positive.
Markup is entered in points, not pips.
For a typical FX pair quoted to five decimal places:
10 points = 1 pip
The Price After Markup section shows the Bid and Ask prices visible to the client.
The Recommended Admin Settings panel shows the values that should be entered in the Match-Trade administration panel. Values are rounded to whole numbers because the administration panel does not support fractional markup values.
The Allow asymmetric bid / ask rounding option can reduce excessive rounding in two-sided scenarios.
Commission Settings #
Client commission is charged in addition to markup.
Available commission types:
- None,
- USD per 1M,
- USDc per Contract,
- USDc per Lot,
- 1/10% permille,
- Pips.
The value entered in Commission Value is interpreted according to the selected commission type.
The Minimum Commission USD option sets the minimum commission charged to the client.
Commission is calculated:
- once for Ask side or Bid side,
- twice for Both sides or Round-turn.
Total client-side revenue is:
Markup Revenue + Commission Revenue
A-Book Costs #
This section is visible only when A-Book routing is selected.
Hedge Commission #
The hedging cost entered in USD per USD 1 million of the transaction’s notional value.
In Round-turn mode, the cost is calculated separately for opening and closing the position.
Hedged Coverage % #
Defines what percentage of the client’s volume is actually hedged.
Example:
- 100% – the entire volume is hedged,
- 60% – hedging cost is calculated on 60% of the volume,
- 0% – no hedging cost.
Coverage affects only hedging cost. Markup and commission are still calculated on the client’s full volume.
The calculator does not include:
- slippage,
- swaps,
- position netting,
- additional LP fees.
Broker Decision Card #
The card displays the main calculation result:
Estimated Broker Profit
The calculation is shown below the result:
**Markup Revenue
- Commission Revenue
= Total client-side revenue
− Hedge Costs
= Estimated Broker Profit**
The result color indicates whether the value is positive, negative, or neutral.
For B-Book transactions, the result represents only deterministic fee revenue. It does not include the broker’s later profit or loss caused by market movements.
Profit Target Simulator #
The Profit Target Simulator works in reverse compared with the main calculator.
The user enters a target broker profit, and the application calculates:
- the required markup,
- the required commission.
Calculate Required Markup #
Shows the markup required to reach the target using the current transaction settings and costs.
The currently configured commission is treated as additional revenue above the target.
Calculate Required Commission #
Shows the required commission using the currently configured markup.
The existing markup is treated as additional revenue above the target.
The result updates automatically when other parameters are changed.
Saved settings #
Presets allow users to save a complete calculator configuration.
A preset may apply to:
- a specific symbol,
- an entire instrument group.
Users can:
- save a configuration,
- create a new version,
- load an existing preset,
- rename, duplicate, or delete a preset,
- export and import presets,
- restore default settings.
A preset stores both the input values and a snapshot of the result at the time it was saved.
Older presets may contain settings that are no longer available in the current application version. In such cases, the application displays a warning explaining that the calculated result may differ.
Admin Group CSV Tool #
This tool is used to prepare a CSV file containing symbol markup and commission settings for the Match-Trade administration panel.
The configuration can be created from:
- an existing Admin Group CSV file,
- the current calculator settings,
- a saved preset,
- a blank configuration.
Settings can be applied:
- to an entire category,
- individually to selected symbols.
When an existing CSV file is imported, the application changes only the selected values and leaves the rest of the file unchanged.
Basic procedure #
- Open the Admin Group CSV tool.
- Select the data source.
- Configure markup and commission for each category.
- Optionally override settings for individual symbols.
- Select the output file location.
- Click Save CSV or Export CSV.
Markup values in the file must always be whole numbers.
Closed Trades Revenue Simulator #
This tool allows users to import a closed-trades history file in CSV or Excel format and estimate the revenue that would have been generated under a selected markup and commission scenario.
After importing the file, the application displays information such as:
- number of transactions,
- total volume,
- current commission,
- broker P&L,
- date range,
- markup and commission revenue,
- revenue per lot,
- results by instrument.
Scenarios can be configured:
- by category,
- individually for each symbol,
- using an Admin Group CSV file.
Simulator – Revenue Goal #
The Simulator tab allows users to prepare a future revenue forecast based on the imported data.
Available settings include:
- target revenue,
- forecast horizon,
- additional markup,
- additional commission,
- volume change compared with historical data.
The application displays projected revenue, daily pace, and the estimated date on which the target will be reached.
Important #
Historical markup revenue is not retrieved from the imported file. It is simulated using the imported transactions and the currently selected scenario.
Values such as point size or contract size may require manual verification, especially for unusual instruments.
Typical workflow #
- Log in to the broker API.
- Select the instrument.
- Verify the contract details.
- Set the reference price.
- Select the routing and calculation mode.
- Enter the volume.
- Configure markup.
- Configure commission.
- For A-Book, enter the hedging cost and coverage percentage.
- Review the Estimated Broker Profit.
- Optionally calculate the required markup or commission for a profit target.
- Transfer the recommended values to the administration panel.
- Save the configuration as a preset.
- Optionally prepare an Admin Group CSV file or run a simulation using historical trades.
Key limitations #
The calculator:
- is not an accounting system,
- does not use actual order execution data,
- does not use a real market Bid/Ask price,
- does not include slippage, swaps, taxes, or accounting adjustments,
- does not model the market result of unhedged B-Book exposure,
- does not reconstruct historical markup from closed trades,
- may require manual correction of contract data and conversion rates.
The results should be treated as configuration support, not as a final financial settlement.
